Lot 1541		1869 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65 Star Cameo PQ. Only 25 proofs minted. A wonderful coin. A well struck, orange-gold example of this extremely rare issue, with no apparent areas of weakness. This remarkable coin is labeled Star Cameo by NGC, and appears to fully merit this rating. Liberty's portrait, the obverse stars, and the eagle and reverse legends all exhibit mint frost that sets off against the smooth, glassy "orange peel" fields. The 1869 half eagle is considered an exceptionally rare date in Proof. In fact, business strikes with a mintage of only 1,760 pieces are also extremely rare and highly elusive. Only 25 Proofs were made. The present piece is the single finest Star Cameo certified by the service. Those collectors who have the resources to collect Proof Liberty half eagles know that many years may elapse before a comparable 1869 specimen appears on the market. If ever. Pop 1; none finer at NGC. The Finest Known (PCGS # 88464) . After the dies are hubbed and the date is applied, the Proof die for gold coins is given multiple polishes with progressively finer and finer polish. The last polish given to the dies prior to being hardened gives the field a surface quite like a mirror. This is the deepest mirror attainable on the dies. When the die is hardened in the next step, the metal shrinks slightly creating a wavy effect on the polished surfaces. It looks somewhat like the surface of an orange. When you see orange peel on a Proof issue you can be certain that it is one of the first examples struck from those dies. Later polishing to the already hardened dies will produce a flatter and shallower mirror. Estimated Value $50,000 - 60,000. Ex: Eliasberg Collection. Choice overall, despite a scattering of tiny marks. A notable rarity in Mint State despite a modestly high mintage. Lot 1545		1875-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Untoned with semi-reflective fields on the obverse. Only 11,828 struck. This lofty-grade 1875-CC is in near the top of the About Uncirculated grade category described by Doug Winter and is high Condition Census with regard to PCGS coins. The latter service describes 12 submission events (possibly with duplicate submittals, they keep no record of such activity) at the AU55 level. Lustrous honey gold with plenty of brightness in the protected areas. From a modest mintage, with most survivors from that mintage at VF or so. A small area of abrasion noted by the 11th star. When seen--which is not often--the 1875-CC is apt to be in VF, occasionally EF preservation. Even a low level AU would be a major numismatic attraction. The present piece, solidly at AU55, is one of the very finest known and will be a showpiece in the collection of its next owner. Pop 12; 4 in 58, 1 in 63 (PCGS # 8337) . Lot 1546		1877-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-50. Mostly untoned. Only 8,680 minted. A touch of luster around devices on this well-preserved specimen with faint traces of peach toning on both sides. Choice for the grade, with an overall visual appeal that approaches a higher level. Given the mintage, it isn�t surprising this is rare so fine; the 1877-CC, when found, is usually in VF or more worn grades, since few if any were exported to Europe or South America during the time of mintage. When this comes to market the advanced collector of Carson City coins will wish to pull out all stops, and bid whatever the competition dictates, with the knowledge that few other opportunities may arise in for many years. Pop 10; 21 finer, 6 in 53, 11 in 55, 4 in 58 (PCGS # 8343) . The mintmark placement is central in the field between the denomination and the details above. The first C is above the left upright of the V, while the second is centered above the V and E. The second C is marginally higher than the first. Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.
